For the Kabinett sector at Art Basel Miami Beach 2025, Michael Rosenfeld Gallery is excited to present a solo exhibition of rarely-before-seen works on paper by Mary Bauermeister (1934–2023). Discovered in the artist's studio in 2019 and exhibited together here for the first time, these vivid abstractions dating from 1953 to 1957 serve as a crucial antecedent to the artist's radical, avant-garde practice. They further represent an early exploration of the foundational concepts that would permeate Bauermeister's entire oeuvre, which grew to include her celebrated stone works, assemblages, and lens boxes. Organic abstraction, optical experimentation, and endless investigations into the visual relationships between multiplication and variation, structure and order, chance and ephemerality, and introversion and extroversion constitute a throughline in Bauermeister's decades-long career.
