Sophie von Hellermann presents a new suite of watercolors inspired by the myth of Medusa and the writings of Marcel Proust, and related themes drawn from literature and Greek mythology. With her signature lyrical strokes, von Hellermann works rapidly with pure pigments to improvise scenes that unfold in dreamlike compositions, dense with movement.
Sophie von Hellermann lives and works in London. Her work is currently on view in a two-person exhibition at Turner Contemporary, Margate, United Kingdom (through Spring 2023). Recent solo exhibitions include Greene Naftali, New York (2019, 2013, 2011); Kunstverein Hannover (2017); Firstsite, Colchester, United Kingdom (2013); and Le Consortium, Dijon, France (2010). Selected recent group exhibitions include Hayward Gallery, London (2021); Greene Naftali, New York (2021); X Museum, Beijing (2020); Bonner Kunstverein, Bonn (2016); Gallery Met, Metropolitan Opera, New York (2014); and Tate Britain, London (2011).
