Pan American Art Projects is pleased to announce the solo exhibition of local artist Ruben Millares.
Millares is a multidisciplinary artist, who has been exhibiting mostly locally since 2005, and is known for his provocative performances and videos. This will be his first solo exhibition of two dimensional pieces and it is titled Paint by Numbers. The show comprises large works on canvas and more intimate pieces made in vellum.
In these pieces, Millares works exclusively with numbers, perhaps a collateral result of being an accountant. His days are filled with numbers, which eventually become people, houses, food, anything and everything. His proposition is to look at numbers as what they are: codes that can decipher contemporary society, making personal something that otherwise could be seen as impersonal and cold.
He is not alone in this quest, since in contemporary society numbers are becoming an essential part of daily life. They identify people, determine their finances and statistics. Here we have amounts that represent different aspects of somebody’s life. Seeing them from a distant perspective, they are only numbers, but they represent intimate details of a person.
Ruben Millares was born in Miami in 1980. He attended Boston College, in Boston, Massachusetts; and the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida. His works have been exhibited in Miami and New York, more recently in Volta 2017, where they were featured.
His pieces are part of prestigious collections such as The Margulies Collection and the Cricket Taplin Collection at the Sagamore Hotel, among others.
