For the Kabinett sector within our booth at Art Basel Miami Beach 2025, we will present 18 examples from N.H. Pritchard's 1972 series, Stillness, abstract, non-textual gouache works on paper on view here for the first time. One of the most formally innovative poets of the 1960s and early 1970s, Pritchard was keenly aware of the visual aspects of his work. Though his writing has been widely recognized, his visual art has been mostly overlooked. In Stillness, Pritchard eschews words, creating circles, dashes, and other forms by hand. Many of the works consist of these shapes arranged into grids, which he permutes as if to find every possible combination. Pritchard developed his own philosophy of "transrealism." In 1981, he said: "I feel there is one reality, and that reality is God; everything else is actual or what I call transreal." He manifested this concept in his work, denoting it visually with the symbol/letter "O." Since nothing was real but God, there was no need to capture reality. Thus, abstraction was a natural extension of Pritchard's transrealism.

Silvia Bächli
abstract: My work is an approach to something that I don't know exactly and that I only find out by doing. So I need many attempts and wrong ways, until I come to something with which I am satisfied. On paper one can hardly correct – but a next paper lies on the pile, another attempt. In the best case, while working I discover something that is more coherent, more surprising than my own imagination. A successful drawing is simple. It expands into space. It is larger than the paper format. (From the catalog of the exhibition at Villa Langmatt Baden, conversation with Markus Stegmann, Nov 2022)
