📝 Exhibition Description:
For Frieze London 2026, Anat Ebgi is pleased to present new oil paintings by London-based artist Gideon Rubin along with new media works by Los Angeles-based artist Jibade-Khalil Huffman.
The presentation centers around the usage of television and film mediums as a stepping off point. Both Huffman and Rubin utilize found imagery to create a sense of knowing—cultural identity that is informed by the visual iconography and language of moving images. Distilling their core tenets, both artists use their distinct mediums to critique and examine the usage of clothing, identity, and cultural clues to allude to building bridges between disparate communities.
Rubin's paintings use distinct but decidedly diverse films such as those of Godard, Rohmer, Wong Kar-wai, and John Hughes to reference the cultural dilution and assimilation of certain time periods. Rendered in broad, economical brushstrokes, his figures mimic the workings of memory, retaining certain details while allowing others to fade or become indistinct. Nearly anonymized, their faceless appearances insist on a level of cultural hybridity, appropriation, and intercontinental shared aesthetic concerns.
Meanwhile the digital collages and video works of Huffman use layering, poetic text, and theoretical "remixing" to assert similar themes. Drawing from a non-exhaustive list of source material—from animated children's entertainment to news clips and viral moments—Huffman's attention to poetic language and the semiotics of moving images addresses how meaning is shaped and ever-changing. Wholly his work dissolves these boundaries into an oceanic visual poem.
