David Kordansky Gallery is pleased to feature a solo presentation of three new paintings by Lucy Bull at the inaugural edition of Art Basel Qatar. The canvases on view at Art Basel Qatar are expansive—one is more than four meters wide—but they are perhaps best defined by their intimacy, and their ability to communicate subtle and intense moods alike. The visionary element of Bull's work resides in its radical openness to a wide range of emotional states and artistic traditions. It also encompasses her relationship to time. In its final, materialized form, painting is not a durational medium; in its making, however, it can be full of numerous beginnings and endings, and for the artist and her viewers alike it can elicit states that seem to go beyond such classification. The eternal, the invisible, the elusive: if these are the seemingly unrepresentable objects of her attention, her process itself is grounded in the immediacy and matter-of-fact pleasures of paint. Full of active surface textures, shifting veils of color, and abstract forms that evoke associations as varied as the viewers who see them, these new paintings immerse their viewers by inviting them to offer reciprocal acts of imagination.
