International curators present exhibitions in Vienna's leading contemporary art galleries.
curated by_vienna was initiated by the Vienna Business Agency's creative unit, departure, in 2009 to support systematic cooperation between Viennese contemporary art galleries and international curators. Vienna boasts a vibrant contemporary art scene as a European metropolis at the crossroads between North and South, East and West, tradition and innovation. In addition to its world-class museums and non-profit organisations, there are numerous excellent galleries that have earned an international reputation through pioneering programmes.
Reflections on the intersections between art and capital provide the impetus for curated by_vienna 2015. Philosopher Armen Avanessian's epynomous essay "Tomorrow Today" addresses artistic strategies for a post-capitalist era. Avanessian explores future (and already existing) alternative models of art and economy. 20 international curators have embarked upon this experiment and are presenting exhibitions on the topic in 20 selected Viennese galleries.
20 exhibitions in Viennese contemporary art galleries conceptualized by more than 20 international curators.
Through the dialogue between outstanding artists of the twentieth century, such as Erró, Robert Crumb, Steve Gianakos, and Mel Ramos, and the younger generation, like Spencer Tunick, Massimo Vitali, Daniele Buetti, Asgar/Gabriel, Oliver Dorfer, Anton Henning, and Cameron Platter who are dealing with fundamental issues of humanity, the exhibition offers a self-ironic and critical stance toward society.
With works by:
Asgar/Gabriel: Daryoush Asgar und and Elisabeth Gabriel, Daniele Buetti, Erró, Robert Crumb, Oliver Dorfer, Steve Gianakos, Anton Henning, Mel Ramos, Spencer Tunick, Massimo Vitali, Cameron Platter, Damien Hirst
