Booth BD07
A presentation of work by two artists from Scotland, Katie Paterson and Callum Innes.
Callum Innes is known for his unique approach to painting and self-invented language of abstraction, where pigments are layered onto a canvas and then removed with washes of turpentine. The play between additive and subtractive processes means that the potential for uncertainty is ever present.
Katie Paterson is renowned for her work at the nexus of art and science. She combines a romantic sensibility with a research-based approach, conceptual precision, and coolly minimalist presentation. Her work collapses the distance between the viewer and the most distant edges of time.
At first glance, their work seems quite different; yet this opportunity to show them together provides a chance to tease out the connections between two artists whose work shares the properties of being conceptually driven, meticulously realised, yet profoundly human. At the heart of it lies our relationship with the sublime – an essentially romantic inclination to understand the insignificance of our place in the cosmic scheme – to contemplate infinity or extinction.
