Hall 11.2, Booth A-211
Christof Mascher's (*1979, lives and works in Braunschweig) approach to his work is not primarily concerned with visible pictorial content. Rather, these serve as a means of transport for the application of color through brushstrokes, painting gestures, and the resulting surfaces and forms. Influences from the graffiti scene, to which Mascher already belonged during his time in Hanover, are recognizable in his painting style.
The artist draws his reference material from art history, especially architecture, as well as from visual influences of pop culture. Thus, in his works, we see detached architectural elements of various epochal and stylistic classifications that are rearranged. Likewise, Mascher's works are filled with quotes from vintage cartoons, album covers, movies, and video games. In choosing the color palette for the new works, Mascher was inspired by pastel colors of the 50s/60s, as well as color combinations used for jogging suits and sneakers in the early 90s.
