Booth G1
For Frieze London 2022, Phillida Reid presents recent and historic works from Celia Hempton, Lea Cetera, Joanna Piotrowska, R.M. Fischer, the estate of Vivian Lynn, Neal Jones, and Bedwyr Williams.
Meditations on observational apparatus, modes of entrapment and the manipulation and dissection of creatures and landscape here find form in sculptural and wall-based works which envision uncanny distortions of the figurative, from Lynn's totemic, hair-covered Caryatid (1986) to Fischer's Triptych (2015) of deflated bodily forms, stretched across perforated steel hanging structures. Paintings by Williams (2021) and Jones (2017) deal in amorphous portraiture and figurative character studies, whilst a selection of new Surveillance paintings by Hempton (2021 - 2022) provide glimpses into CCTV footage feeds accessed remotely through an online platform.
Cetera's 2022 video-sculpture Giant Conch (2022) encases footage of the titular marine animal being expertly gutted, prepared and plated within an expanded steel mesh structure reminiscent of a cage or lobster trap. These works sit alongside Piotrowska's Enclosure XLIX (2015), a large-scale work from a series in which Piotrowska photographs empty zoo enclosures, embodying her concerns with the aesthetics of captivity and architectures of control.
