David Kordansky Gallery is pleased to announce a solo presentation of new paintings by Hilary Pecis for Paris+ par Art Basel 2022. The fair will take place October 19 – 23, 2022, with a VIP Preview on October 19. Visit us at Booth A22.
In these new works, Pecis depicts Southern California's sun-drenched landscapes and turbid cerulean skies—as well as its quiet interior spaces—as she reimagines the physical and emotional characteristics generally associated with the region. Her energetic, diaristic approach allows her to chronicle her surroundings and daily routines, and to address long-standing lineages of genre painting in the most contemporary terms.
In Leo Carrillo (2022), Pecis moves away from the domestic spaces that she often depicts and toward the exterior landscape of the Malibu coast. Drawn to Leo Carrillo State Beach for its dramatic rock formations and colorful plant life, she renders the California sagebrush and eucalyptus that populate the image's foreground with buoyant attention to detail. At the same time, a lifeguard station alludes to the shore's vibrant and busy beach life.
