Booth C2
LGDR celebrates the inaugural edition of Frieze Seoul with a presentation of new and recent works by an intergenerational group of the gallery’s artists, complemented by rare historical masterworks selected for the fair’s debut in Korea. Among the artworks on view will be never-before-seen objects spanning mediums, presented in juxtapositions that reflect the expertise and passion of LGDR’s founding partners Dominique Lévy, Brett Gorvy, Amalia Dayan, and Jeanne Greenberg Rohatyn. On view in LGDR’s booth (C2) will be outstanding works by Marina Adams, Enrico Castellani, Francesco Clemente, George Condo, Lucio Fontanta, Seung-taek Lee, Amani Lewis, Tomokazu Matsuyama, Joel Mesler, Alexis Ralaivao, Sean Scully, Lorna Simpson, Pierre Soulages, Pat Steir, Mickalene Thomas, Tu Hongtao, Günther Uecker, and Zhang Zipiao. The gallery also will exhibit a curated selection of works in the online Frieze Viewing Room beginning August 26.
“We are proud to be a part of Frieze’s first edition in Seoul—an exciting moment for the international art market in this crucial collecting region,” said Brett Gorvy, LGDR Co-Founder. “My partners and I have long histories working with Korean collectors and artists, including Chung Sang-Hwa and Seung-taek Lee, and we look forward to sharing and learning with such an interested and committed audience.”
Booth highlights include:
• Six new paintings from American artist Joel Mesler’s latest series will premiere together on the opening day of the fair. Accompanied by several works on paper, these canvases merge elements of Mesler’s dynamic visual lexicon. Golden letters in the shape of foil balloons punctuate vivid junglescapes, spotlighting the artist’s use of bright color, bold figuration, and artful text to convey messages of joy and hope. Mesler’s triptych Untitled (Spiritual Journey) (2022) will also be on view.
• Tu Hongtao’s immersive painting Marching on Overlapping Peaks (2019-22) will be exhibited for the first time, coinciding with the Chinese artist’s solo presentation at LGDR Paris. Drawing from Tu’s encounters with nature, the work exemplifies the artist’s masterful synthesis of Eastern and Western landscape traditions and conveys his latest meditations on the modernizing world. • Following her critically acclaimed solo exhibition at LGDR in New York, the gallery will showcase works by Marina Adams, whose rigorous abstract explorations of color and form find the New York-based artist at the height of her powers. Adams’s latest works will be on view, including her new painting Peyote 3 (2022), and A Series of Dreams: Dream 4 (2022), one of many works on paper that pulse with the artist’s lyrical compositions.
• Newly working with LGDR, Zhang Zipiao’s enigmatic paintings find inspiration in the anatomies of flora and fauna. Her most recent canvases reference animal carcasses mingled with floral imagery, as seen in both of her works on display in the gallery’s booth, including Peony 12 (2022), a mesmeric large-scale painting rendered in Zhang’s signature graphic lines and vibrant colors to suggest the contours of flesh.
• Francesco Clemente’s Winter Flowers XXIX (2022) is the latest in the Italian artist’s Winter Flowers series, which ponders the exquisite ephemerality of flowers as analogues for universal experiences. Integral to Clemente’s long and renowned practice, botanical motifs exert a powerful presence here, painted with luminous plant and vegetable pigments.
Joining these and many other exceptional modern and contemporary works are Günther Uecker’s Shield (2022), an intimately scaled relief comprised of iron nails, and paintings by French master Pierre Soulages. Two works from Soulages’s most recent series, Peinture 254 x 181 cm, 13 avril 2008 (2008) and Peinture 101 x 130 cm, 16 août 2015 (2015), join an early example to showcase the artist’s endless variation of gestures and means.
“For this occasion, we are drawing upon the gallery’s deeply held knowledge of the region to present a selection of artworks that pay tribute to the remarkable energy of this moment in Seoul,” said Bona Yoo, LGDR Senior Director. “We are thrilled to debut new works by our artists and introduce their achievements in Korea.”
