Booth 1C24
For Art Basel Hong Kong 2022 Southard Reid presents a grouping of seven individual paintings by Celia Hempton, all made between 2021 and 2022. Part of the artist's Surveillance series, begun in 2016, the works record live video feeds from the freely accessible website Insecam, which allows online visitors to encounter remote spaces and landscapes through streamed security footage. Each titled for the precise location and date of the original stream, Hempton's paintings measure no larger than a standard laptop screen, maintaining the intimate yet lonely scale of the original digital encounter.
The works act as portals into brief, often banal moments across diverse timezones and settings: an empty alleyway in Nabeul, Tunisia on August 13th 2021; a white van parked in Linz, Austria, on December 3rd 2021; a monochrome palm frond in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam on January 15th 2022. Subjects vary between legible, familiar environments – car parks, shops, churches – and abstracted fields of vision obscured by weather, glitches or obstacles, in which locations exist solely as light, colour and shape.
