Artist Teppei Takeda's distinctive process involves making a further painting of one of his own paintings. His works are the result of his fundamentally questioning the experience of viewing a painting, asking what it means to view a painting. "Why can we find a beauty that deeply moves us therein? On this earth, there remain many noted paintings that have continued to capture the hearts of people for literally centuries. Is the painting inherently beautiful? Or is it that the viewer has created its beauty?" Focusing on this question, and during that period of concentration, he found a breakthrough in the practice of "again painting a painting."
This presentation consists of eight new paintings, each the result of this time-consuming process. They were all created in 2020 or 2021, during the pandemic. This was a period when Takeda returned to his studio to work alone, as if reprising the time when he distanced himself from society for nearly a decade to explore what painting really meant to him. During the solitary periods in his creative process, he was able to look again and again at the details and the depth of each work to ensure that as a viewer he sensed everything that should be sensed. The result of that solitude was the rich experience of truly seeing a painting.
