Booth 4.09
David B. Smith Gallery will feature a focused presentation of contemporary ceramics with Brooklyn-based artist Gustav Hamilton, and Fayetteville, AR-based artist Linda Nguyen Lopez.
Gustav Hamilton's primarily ceramic works possess a uniquely modern surrealistic quality, wherein playfulness and humor welcome a sense of familiarity. Hamilton's latest body of work explores illusions of depth via wood paneled paintings with embedded ceramic objects set into the compositions, often incorporating art historical references and personal narrative. The result is upbeat and even jovial at times, with the complexity of the process-bound ceramic material and the level of mastery required to create such works humbly present.
Linda Lopez's distinctive free standing ceramic sculptures are as technically rigorous as they are captivating. Her most recognizable ongoing body of work, known as Dust Furries, will occupy the floor of the booth on a custom sculptural plinth, which has been tiled with a pattern inspired by Vietnamese textiles. Presented in vibrant gradients of color, ceramic sculptures rear their bulbous heads as hundreds of porcelain fingers feel their way around chunky debris, endlessly pouring over one another. In the juxtaposition of gentle curves and sharp angles, Lopez flips the gaze between bodily and foreign, familiar and alien.
