Booth S039
Perrotin is pleased to return to Art Fair Tokyo 2022 with a solo booth presented by Jean-Philippe Delhomme.
The artist will showcase his recent paintings - portraits and nightscapes under the title Day for Night. "Day for night" is a set of cinematic techniques used to simulate a night scene while filming in daylight. The Day for Night motif is a poetic reminder of Delhomme's commitment to representation, painting the real from direct observation of the subject over painting from photography.
The portraits are executed in a single session without preliminary sketches, often with the same models. They testify of the relationship between the painter and the model. The sessions take place during daytime in the bright Paris studio, a setting rendered more as a mental abstract space than a physical one. At night, the gaze exchange economy leaves room for loneliness. The urban nocturnal landscapes of Paris record the fragility of the visible. Bringing together the presentation of portraits and nightscapes deepen the understanding of Delhomme's practice. Through traditional genres of portraiture, landscape, still life he explores the direct representation of the visible from the eye to the work.
