For its debut project at Art Basel Miami Beach, Central Galeria is pleased to present Mariana Manhães’ Words Starting With Letters Are Utterly Humane: an installation that aims to create its own biome, a cyber-entropic landscape that evokes the question: “What’s the language of millenary things?”.
This body of work points toward a new stage of Manhães’ research, now focusing on organiclike materials such as unfired clay and dental stone. They are used along with fabrics, electronic devices and other media to create soft sculptures linked to each other. Small engine-articulated elements move in response to an animation video, which displays an element of nature moving and making sounds, as if communicating in an unintelligible language.
Mariana Manhães (Niterói, 1977) lives and works in Rio de Janeiro. She holds a degree in Psychology at UFF (Niterói, 2001) and a Master of Communication and Aesthetics Technologies from UFRJ (Rio de Janeiro, 2012). Her artistic education includes EAV Parque Lage (Rio de Janeiro, 1997-2005) and Tate Modern workshop Art, Memory and Testimony (London, 2003). She was granted the Marcantônio Vilaça / Funarte Award (2015) and shortlisted at the CNI SESI SENAI Marcantônio Vilaça Award (2017). Solo exhibitions include: Central Galeria (São Paulo, 2019), Paço Imperial (Rio de Janeiro, 2013), CCBB RJ (Rio de Janeiro, 2010), Galeria Leme (São Paulo, 2008), MAC Niterói ( 2007), among others. Her participations in the Vancouver Biennale (2014) and the Bienal de Cerveira (2013) also stand out, as well as in group shows at: CCSP (São Paulo, 2017), Museu Brasileiro de Escultura (Ribeirão Preto, 2015), MAC USP (São Paulo, 2017), Pina Estação (São Paulo, 2016), Instituto Tomie Ohtake (São Paulo, 2013), ShanghArt Gallery (Shanghai, 2012), Ruskin Gallery (Cambridge, 2012), Mattress Factory (Pittsburgh, 2011). Her work is part of many important collections, such as the ones from: MAC USP, Pinacoteca de São Paulo, Rio Art Museum, MAM Bahia, among others.
