For Art Basel Miami Beach Southard Reid is pleased to present 'Descent', an installation comprised of individual elements, by London-based artist Prem Sahib. Building on a series of exhibitions under the same title, held at Southard Reid in London in 2019 and 2020, Sahib here brings together a set of eight obsidian mirrors that line the booth’s two parallel walls. The two rows of dark, reflective panels flank a new wallpaper work occupying the central rear wall, a monochrome image taken on a mobile phone and blown up to form a softly abstracted backdrop.
'Descent' elaborates on a body of research inspired by ancient obsidian mirrors within the archaeological ruins of Pompeii. Sahib’s mirrors are conceived of as thresholds, formally reminiscent of cracked phone touchscreens and near-esoteric in their resemblance to historic scrying devices used to connect with spirits – both communicative technologies through which the private self is simultaneously reflected back and connected to a vast, disembodied network. Each mirror is formed of cut, joined and polished obsidian rock: imperfect surfaces which bear the cracks and scarring of the substance’s formative process, in which erupted magma cools and hardens into volcanic glass. Encased in bespoke metal frames with shallow shelves at their bases, the mirrors suggest the potential for an offering or votive.
