Highlights include Werner Büttner’s Mary Magdalene, Full of Regrets ... (Maria Magdalena, voll der Reue ...), 2017, presented in anticipation of the artist’s first solo exhibition at the London gallery later this year. Also on view is You’re a thing, 2020, by Alex Hubbard, included in his current solo show at Simon Lee Gallery, Hong Kong.
Erin Shirreff makes her gallery debut with Fig. 10, 2019, part of an ongoing series in which she constructs and photographs small objects from coloured plaster that evoke modernist sculpture, in the manner of a ‘figure’, or illustration, in an art historical textbook. Equally concerned with themes of time and process is Rachel Howard’s Wait of the World (9 Red Roses), 2020, in which the artist pushes paint through lace curtains to imprint their complex pattern onto linen canvas.
Both Clare Woods and Toby Ziegler present new works that explore floral still life and its associations with mortality. In Woods’ World of One, 2021, a bouquet is immortalised in full bloom, in a richly-hued arrangement that cascades from a glass vase. Ziegler’s Suntrap, 2021 appropriates a motif from 17th century painter Jan Brueghel the Elder’s Flowers on a Plate. The reproduction is effaced using an orbital sander, directly contrasting the time-consuming process of Renaissance figurative painting with the rapidity of erasure.
