For the first edition of Art021 PLATFORM, TKG+ presents the works of three artists: Mit Jai Inn, Jane Lee, and Sawangwongse Yawnghwe in an exploration of their painting processes and practices. Jane Lee (b. 1963) breaks the boundaries of painting in terms of materials, dimension, forms, and techniques. She deconstructs the traditional elements of painting and expands its vocabulary with structural component to blur the line between painting and sculpture. Sawangwongse Yawnghwe (b. 1971) bases his practice on portraiture tradition and delves into his family history. He is deeply engaged in politics in connection to historical events related to his family and country, in an attempt to provide a perspective beyond existing archives, and to create a conceptual form of painting beyond its pictorial language. Defying conventional boundaries of painting, Mit Jai Inn (b. 1960) enacts multiple histories and treatments of the medium through a physically rigorous and repetitive labor cycle of mixing, applying, overlaying, and eroding pigment. More than 100 years after Paul Delaroche's statement "Painting is dead," Lee and Yawnghwe explore the long history of painting and combine their own cultural background to create a personal style that defies the traditional definition of painting.
