La galería de arte STOA de Estepona (Málaga) será la única representante española en la prestigiosa feria de Seattle (USA).
Our proposal consists of the latest work of three Hispanic artists: Salustiano and Conchi Álvarez from Spain, and Astrid Sommer from Mexico.
To express their works of art, both Salustiano and Conchi Alvarez use figurative language; figures of speech that go beyond the literal meanings of words to allow for all to enjoy and understand them, even those people perhaps more inexperienced in art. The pieces invite you to scrutinize and delve into every detail of their execution, for example each and every brush stroke, the colours and the glazes. To both painters, Beauty is the focal point, their eleventh commandment, and each of their paintings have an air of freshness and novelty to them that can only be considered as resounding contemporaneity.
Salustiano is a master of pictorial art, with well-deserved international recognition. He represents the most exquisite contemporary neo-figuration at the highest execution. His portraits are of elegant classicism and neat finishing. The sculptural effect of a figure seemingly emerging from a flat background impacts greatly on its viewers, configuring new iconographic types for the genre. In his paintings, the black, red or white background floods the pictorial surfaces creating an overflow effect, seeming to infects the clothes of the people being portrayed, isolating their skin, and endowing them with a strong sculptural effect. We suggest the exhibition of his latest painting, recently finished in 2019: AND EARTH WILL REACH TO INFINITY LIKE BEFORE GALILEO (ZAHARA KIMONO)-Natural pigments and acrylic resin on canvas 130 cm. It is a new Venus of unequivocal quattrocento reminiscence, with superlative three-dimensionality, establishing a new iconographic type. Zahara represents all timeless, classic and contemporary portraits, at the same time. It is a successful attempt to reach the supreme beauty, exquisiteness, elegance, and perfection. In the words of Salustiano himself:
“My collection ‘AND THE EARTH WILL EXTEND TO INFINITY, AS BEFORE GALILEO’ recalls our childhood, when the world revealed upon us as mysterious, magical and supernatural as poetry.
Before any major geographical and scientific breakthrough, humans saw the world through the eyes of a child: astonished eyes.
Before the days of Galileo, people used fantasy to explain what they could not understand and created myths to explain everything, from the naïve and poetic view of the life of a child.
This is the purpose of my new collection of paintings: an invitation to contemplate life, even if only for a moment, through the innocent eyes of a child. The children we were once.”
Conchi Álvarez is a Spanish artist and curator who participates in international fairs all over the world, and reinterprets the urban landscape genre. Her acrylics on panel make up her series "Urban Daydreams". Paintings of a subjective and capricious magic realism, of cities lived in and enjoyed, always in the historical centre, a place where the urban history is concentrated, superimposed and where essences and experiences explode in paintings in a metamorphosis of color. This is done without affecting the form of the cities and ensuring that all corners and streets are still recognizable.
Within these cities there are so many solitary moments and spaces, free of people, but laden with invisible traces of history seen only by the artist. The exciting cities, saturated with colour and overflowing with light, illuminate a personal and solitary journey for the artist, an urban itinerary, becoming a vital itinerary where the artist's view the city becomes a mirror of her own existence, or of her own longing, her urban self-portrait. The artist uses urban landscapes as metaphorical self-portraits of her soul, where she eliminates people and noise to find herself and exercise inner catharsis.
We suggest the exhibition of her latest works.”Calle Cascajares” and “Tenemos capirotes de nazareno”
Astrid Sommer. She lives and works in Mexico DF. Astrid is an artist whose works belongs to the most colorful and elegant abstraction. Her paintings are done in acrylic on large canvases in which she unfolds a torrent of spontaneity, vibrant color, and beautiful plasticity, which form the basis of her paintings. In her paintings you perceive the "vibration of the soul", without which, as Kandinsky used to say, the work cannot be produced. Her titles are succinct, concise and, usually only a single word, representing concepts. They are works of abstraction dominated by light, colour and formally harmonic expressionism. The forms oscillate from spontaneous strokes apparently devoid of meaning, to features that configure knowable forms, from the world of figuration. Indeed, most of the canvases populate certain signs that, as Eliot used to say, "they do not have to describe, but, like its essence, condense an entire emotional complex". Characters that use symbols to represent, perhaps, memories, feelings, longing... or a chained form, born the subconscious, far from the present thought, a result of the restlessness, which is what "renews the creative faculty" (Odilon Redon). Therefore, the contemplation of Astrid´s works of art invites one to the evasion of reality, to be carried away by the reverie, making a reverse path to the one she made. But on that trip, from the certainty that her work is borne from sincerity and authenticity, we must follow the advice of J. Plazaola, and proceed to set aside our prejudices, expand the field of taste, reach the "loss of self", and try to enjoy each and every one of her works.
