Dove va il disegno? - A fictitious conversation with Mr T.
Melting themes and starting points for a drawing project in Disegni / Artissima at the Galeria Ángeles Baños, by Susanne S. D. Themlitz.
Susanne S. Themlitz, born in Lisbon in 1968, Portuguese-German artist, combines in her work observations on perception and collective memory, irony and self-criticism.
Her multifaceted oeuvre includes drawings, sculptures, installations, paintings and videos. Frequently, her work inquires on the following subjects: what is drawing, when is a drawing a drawing, what is the object, how does the drawing behave in relationship to other media, where is the person, where the observer, the presence of absence…? This is probably why Themlitz had already focused on drawing and sculpture during her first art studies in Lisbon, back in the 90s.
Where is drawing going? Where is the drawing? How far can we go when we talk about drawing?
Themlitz has developed a concept for Artissima / Disegni with multiple landscapes and elements, microscopies that enter into a fictitious dialogue with the imaginary journeys and dreams in the literature of Antonio Tabucchi, the Italian author who resided in Portugal.
They are fragments taken from Tabucchi’s short stories “Dreams of Dreams" displayed in five vitrines: drawings on reproductions of Chinese woodcuts from 1640, memories / retrospections ... The landscape - a drawn journey - or multiple parallel journeys. Built landscapes. The words in the vitrines refer to images, which create images, layers, connection points ... Also in Artíssima/Disegni the sculpture "After The Journeys In Between Mr. Tabucchi’s Pages (Monument)" and the two canvases are also part of that microcosm.
The drawing as lines-joinings, territories, networks, maps ... The line, the point, landscape, magnifiers, micro-territories on a stone, coexistent dimensions in A4, A3, millimeter paper, in line or squared paper.
Reality or not. Fiction or not. Thelmitz’s drawing consist of points and lines, it is emptiness and abyss, it is any perspective, any macro-distance and depth. Shadow, path and profile.
