Sabrina Amrani is delighted to present "Fragments", a group presentation with five MENASA women artists from her roster, for Abu Dhabi Art Fair 2020.
"Fragments" is anchored on different margins and visions of the MENASA region, and explores the disjunctive nature of personal identity: In a constructed world where cultural histories are mismatched by individual experiences and global discourses, we witness the birth of an open-ended fragmentary self, without beginning or end, glued together as an interminable puzzle of personal, local, regional, global and universal stories. Different orders of representation –internal and external, collide at the moment of forming reliable memories and disrupt the natural course of narrated histories.
Artists from the MENASA respond to this new condition of the fragmentary –coeval with transience and temporariness, through a combination of multi-sourced strategies that both cover and discover cultural grammars, while articulating the global themes of a world in constant change and placing topographical markers in an environment dominated by sensorial abstractions, which belie the critical importance of the distance between difference and exclusion.
"Fragments" is a selection of works by Manal AlDowayan (KSA), Amina Benbouchta (Morocco), Zoulikha Bouabdellah (Algeria), Nicène Kossentini (Tunisia) and Ayesha Jatoi (Pakistan).
