In our presentation titled Subliminal Spaces at Abu Dhabi Art 2020, we present works by Jagannath Panda, Praneet Soi, Gigi Scaria and Sachin George Sebastian, who employ a narratively varied visual vocabulary when denoting one's relationship to space. We might find ourselves lost but entrenched and within as in Gigi Scaria's acrylic works, or offered Praneet Soi's unboundedness in the form of a ship that promises guidance and possibility though somewhere else, or we might contemplate the abstraction of familiar structures from prolonged exposure in Jagannath Panda's paper works, or re-visit the memory of outside spaces through dialogue and cultural markers as Sachin George Sebastian invites us to. With current limited access to the outside world, all acts of world-making and reality become as creative an endeavour as the mimetic enterprise once inspired from it.
The effectuation of space is modelled closely after structures of inhabitation and displacement, which are cognitive faculties much like expressions of time that are often linked with subjectivity. The physical incarnation of architectural constructions is certainly a sensory smorgasbord, which calculates presence and absence in equal but dialectical terms. Through a refined gaze, which ends up finding what it seeks, a deconstructed space is as viable and intelligible as a memorable, gilded façade, reason being that faculties of interpretation and perspective guide viewers as much, if not more, as visual recognition through observation.
