As one of the first international galleries participating in West Bund Art & Design, we return to the fair for the 7th consecutive year. Our presentation, ‘Gesture & Spirit’, features an exceptional group of contemporary artists and modern masters. Exemplary paintings include ‘Paysage’ (c. 1940), an exquisitely depicted, highly textural landscape by 20th-century French avant-garde master Francis Picabia and ‘Untitled’ (2006) by German conceptualist Günther Förg, an expressive and gestural work from his Grid Paintings series dating from 2005, in which the loose and irregular cross hatching of Förg’s wobbly lines hint at architectural allusions. Another highlight is the late American Abstract Expressionist sculptor and painter David Smith’s oil on canvas painting ‘Untitled’ (1934). Smith transformed the innovations of European modernism into a richly diverse new artistic language.
The booth also features contemporary works from the Hauser & Wirth family of artists, such as conceptual artist Jenny Holzer’s ‘Survival: What urge will save us…’ (2019), which features Holzer’s use of text to provoke reflection while challenging expectations and prejudices. Lorna Simpson’s ‘Sonorousness’ (2019), an illusionistic depiction of an arctic landscape is washed with iridescent shades of blue. Zeng Fanzhi’s ‘Untitled’ (2018), explores Oriental and Western practices, from his study of Paul Cézanne and Zhao Gan, drawing influence from the work of Giorgio Morandi, to give insights into the dialogue between abstraction and representation. Hauser & Wirth’s presentation this year features a new work by Zhang Enli, entitled ‘The Farmer’ (2020), which shows the artist’s progression to looser and freer brushwork, expressing his own emotive intuition through the washes and waves of pigment in the work, a dialogue with traditional Chinese brush painting. Zhang Enli creates his own distinctive cursive through tone and diaphanous mark-making, bringing fresh perspectives to his inner emotions and memories.
